Who we are
A non-profit association whose members are private companies and cooperatives in olive growing, milling, trade and packaging, from Greece's principal olive-producing regions.
SYPETEEL brings olive growing, milling, trade and packaging together into one value chain, so that the added value of Greek olive oil stays in Greece.
The Association
The Association for the Production, Trade and Packaging of Greek Olive Oil (ΣΥ.Π.Ε.Τ.Ε.ΕΛ. / SYPETEEL) was founded in 2025 by companies and organisations active across every stage of the Greek olive oil chain.
Unlike bodies that represent a single link, SYPETEEL brings together growers, cooperatives, olive mills, traders and packers — so that the sector can speak to government, science and international markets with one documented position.
A non-profit association whose members are private companies and cooperatives in olive growing, milling, trade and packaging, from Greece's principal olive-producing regions.
A larger share for branded, packaged Greek olive oil in the domestic and international market, and retention of added value within the Greek economy.
Through evidence-based policy positions, structured dialogue with public authorities, and cooperation with universities and research institutes. We complement — not replace — the sector's existing institutions.
“Greece produces some of the finest olive oil in the world. Much of it, however, leaves the country in bulk — and its value leaves with it.”
The challenge
Greece is consistently among the world's leading olive oil producers. Yet most of its exported volume travels in bulk and is packaged elsewhere. Volume alone does not create value: value comes from branded, packaged product with a recognisable identity.
Strategic pillars
At its first session the Board adopted four lines of action, each translating into concrete and measurable initiatives.
Institutional connection between olive growing, mills, trade and packaging, under a shared objective and shared representation.
Building a strong, recognisable Greek brand that conveys quality, authenticity, history and nutritional value.
Increasing the share of packaged Greek olive oil in retail, food service and exports.
Cooperation with universities and research centres, dissemination of knowledge, and support for sustainable production practices.
Policy positions
The following positions were submitted by a delegation of the Association to the Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food and restated by the first elected Board. They form the standing agenda of our institutional dialogue.
A formal coordinating body for the sector, in line with international practice, with clear objectives, timelines and accountability.
Reliable Greek-origin labelling and workable traceability systems with regular stock balances, so that “Greek” means something measurable.
A realistic plan to reduce anonymous bulk sales without reducing the income of genuine olive growers.
Official, transparent costing from grove to bottle, as a basis for pricing, support measures and negotiation.
Access to finance on terms comparable to competing olive-producing countries, and lower energy costs across the chain.
Coordinated action by central and regional government on water scarcity, grove adaptation and stabilisation of output.
A multi-year promotion plan for Greek olive oil in the domestic and international market, with a quantified target for the share of branded packaged product.
Funding for scientific research and systematic transfer of results to growers and businesses.
History
Each milestone is documented by public announcements and by the Greek agricultural and business press.
Origin
The founding General Assembly convenes in Athens, adopts the statutes and elects a provisional Board chaired by Dimitrios Favvas.
Institutional dialogue
A delegation of the Association meets the political leadership of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food and submits a memorandum of sector priorities.
Legal personality
In January 2026 the Single-Member Court of First Instance of Achaia accepts the application and approves the establishment of the association. SYPETEEL acquires legal personality.
Convocation
The Association convenes its members to a General Assembly with elections, to appoint the first regular Board of Directors.
Institutional consolidation
The General Assembly elects the first regular Board, which is constituted in office. The Association's 41 members represent roughly 100,000 tonnes of olive oil per year — about 40% of an average Greek crop. The announcement is published on 19 June 2026.
Official operation
The Board addresses an official notification letter to ministries, universities, chambers of commerce and sector bodies, with an open invitation to cooperate.
Institutional dialogue
On 15 September 2026 the Association presents its membership and strategic objectives to Minister Margaritis Schinas, in the presence of Deputy Minister Ioannis Andrianos. Photo and details
Governance
Elected by the General Assembly of members and constituted in office in June 2026, for a four-year term. Its composition spans four Greek Regions — the Peloponnese, Crete, Western Greece and the North Aegean — and six Regional Units.
